Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Showtime comedy Happyish was given a ten-episode order today, the network announced. The show, created by author Shalom Auslander, stars Hoffman as a vaguely miserable 42-year-old hoping to find more, well, happiness in his life. Kathryn Hahn plays his wife, and Rhys Ifans plays his boss. Let the well of stories about sad middle-aged straight white guys never run dry! Showtime also announced a ten-episode order for the drama The Affair, which stars Luther’s Ruth Wilson and The Wire’s Dominic West as people cheating on their spouses with each other. Joshua Jackson plays Wilson’s husband, and Maura Tierney plays West’s wife. (Who would cheat on Pacey? Only someone working through some really heavy issues, probably.) The show comes from Sarah Treem and Hagai Levi, who previously worked on In Treatment, so expect to get your heart just ripped out over and over again.
