For the latest edition of “Life in Pictures,” photographer Michael Schmelling went inside the garage in Highland Park, California where 50-year-old Marc Maron, comedian and star of Maron, records the “WTF” podcast. He really is that anxious, bodily obsessed, and into his cats, as you’ll find in the gallery ahead.

Playing guitar in my living room and being onstage in front of people are the only reprieves that I get from me. And also talking to people in the garage. I sort of need to be engaged with those things. With a microphone, a person, or a musical instrument. All the rest is just a lot of crazy in my head. 9:45 a.m. My A.A. sponsor and I meet maybe once a week or two weeks. I’ve known him for probably 13, 14 years. He’s since become a therapist. 10:54 a.m. I leave food out all day long, and my cats still don’t get fat. And I think that’s why I’m jealous of them. If I had an all-you-can-eat buffet, even if it was just one thing, I would not stop eating it. 10:54 a.m. I leave food out all day long, and my cats still don’t get fat. 11:05 a.m. There was a torrential downpour and it looked like my garage [where he records the podcast] was gonna flood out, so I freaked out and bought sandbags. 11:05 a.m. There was a torrential downpour and it looked like my garage [where he records the podcast] was gonna flood out, so I freaked out and bought sandbags.

2:58 p.m. With Martin Starr, I was anxious because he’s not a big talker. But I also knew he wanted to do the show. That can be the weird part. Sometimes you have to coax people into it. May 22. 10:39 a.m. I earned that hole. When I bought these pants, they were just straight selvedge denim. Pristine! So everything that’s happened with these pants has happened with me. 10:55 a.m. I only do this when I feel like I’m getting sick. I was preparing to spend the weekend with someone and I really didn’t want to get sick, so I was in a lot of panic. She lives in another state. We’re kind of on the down-low. 10:55 a.m. I only do this when I feel like I’m getting sick. 11:21 a.m. My shirts aren’t hand-wash, they’re regular wash, but I don’t put them in the dryer. I just think that dryers are like ovens. 11:59 a.m. I generally have a problem with well-adjusted Harvard people. But I made that a part of the podcast conversation today with [Neighbors director] Nick Stoller. I gave him a hard time when he said he bakes artisan bread. 11:59 a.m. I generally have a problem with well-adjusted Harvard people. 2:49 p.m. Ryan Singer, who’s a comedian I take on the road with me sometimes, does that mountain all the time, just hikes the hell out of it. It’s sort of an aggressively spiritual thing for him.
