On Monday, Craig Ferguson announced he’s leaving CBS’s 12:35am program The Late Late Show in December after 10 years on the air, and comedian Norm Macdonald has thrown his hat into the ring to replace him. What happened is a Norm Macdonald fan started the Twitter hashtag #latelatenormnorm yesterday, and ever since, Macdonald has been retweeting every single tweet with the hashtag in a pretty blatant attempt to express interest in the job and build momentum, or maybe he’s just goofing around.
Responding to a fan on Twitter, Macdonald says he has “no idea” if him getting the job is a possibility, explaining, “I haven’t been approached by CBS. I assumed they already have someone. I know Les Moonves, really cool guy.” A CBS exec insisted yesterday that the network is nowhere near making a decision about The Late Late Show’s new host yet. A list of people CBS is allegedly considering for the job came out yesterday, which included Neil Patrick Harris, Michael Ian Black, Joel McHale (who can only do it if Community gets canceled), Amy Schumer, and The Daily Show’s Jason Jones and John Hodgman.
Norm Macdonald is certainly an interesting choice for the job. He’s an amazing late night guest, and like both of NBC’s late night hosts, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, he’s a former SNL Weekend Update anchor. Plus, as evidenced by the Twitter support, Macdonald has a sizable fanbase that’s intensely loyal. His last TV gig was hosting Comedy Central’s Sports Show with Norm Macdonald, which was canceled after one season in 2011. He returned to the public eye last year when he launched Norm Macdonald Live, a show on YouTube’s Video Podcast Network.
