Hang ten, y’all. It’s summertime, and our biggest sunshine cheerleader has got to be The Fault in Our Stars’s Shailene Woodley. You can tell by her constant use of shaka hands, done by extending the thumb and smallest finger while holding the three middle fingers curled (your hand can also be rotated back and forth for emphasis). The move, which we imagine she picked up in Hawaii while filming The Descendants, can mean “hang loose” and is a sign of solidarity among compatriots: I’m totally digging that sunset too, man.” Shai stays upbeat by flashing the shaka all over the red carpet. Here’s a brief history.
