Forty-seven years and about three weeks ago, Jimi Hendrix played a set at the Monterey Pop Festival that would put him on the map. Jimi: All Is by My Side tells Hendrix’s story leading up to it. André Benjamin (a.k.a. André 3000) stars as the legend, seemingly nailing the voice and general coolness (we imagine the latter was easier than the former for André 3000). Written and directed by 12 Years a Slave writer John Ridley, the movie, oddly enough, won’t feature any of Hendrix’s songs, as his estate denied their request. Instead the film is made up of Benjamin covers of Hendrix covers. At least it’s not a Janet Jopler situation.
