Michael Cera’s Surprise Album Is Really Pretty Good

Michael Cera dropped a surprise album last night, and you know what, it’s pretty good. The 18 tracks are a mix of pleasant instrumentals and a sort of bedroom indie-folk. It’s kind of like if Cass McCombs and Jason Schwartzman as Coconut Records tried to play Paul McCartney’s Ram and upbeat versions of Elliott Smith songs. More than anything, it really is the music you’d imagine Michael Cera making in his spare time. Of course, this isn’t Cera’s first foray into music; beyond playing musicians in films, he was also the touring bass player for the really solid “Doom Wop” supergroup Mister Heavenly a few years back. The album, true that, is currently available to stream for free on Cera’s Bandcamp. He truly is the Beyoncé of Michael Cera–types.
