It has long been rumored that William Shatner would be returning to the starship Enterprise for Roberto Orci’s Star Trek 3, and today Badass Digest offered up some plot details (possible spoilers ahead), claiming the scene in which he will appear involves Chris Pine’s Kirk and Zachary Quinto’s Spock interacting with their future selves, played by Shatner and Leonard Nimoy (which is to say Shatner and Nimoy would play “future alt-timeline Kirk and Spock” instead of their original characters).

Earlier today, Shatner also tweeted a cryptic “I’m baaaaccckk!!!” which a number of sites took to be a confirmation that he was returning to Star Trek, although they were quickly disabused of that notion. After deleting the initial tweet, the actor followed up, writing: “I’m baaaccck in LA. I heard Mercury is in retrograde so I suppose we can expect craziness.” And he had some strong words for some of the perpetrators of the, um, journalistic atrocity:

Whether the rumors are true or not, Shatner clearly isn’t ready to confirm anything: Currently a pinned Tweet at the top of his feed reads “Let’s talk ST. I don’t know anything about the current gossip. Nobody has contacted me. Right now it’s just rhetoric to cause hype.”
