We’ve got the exclusive first clip from the new film The Voices, and if you didn’t know any better, you’d think this moment was excerpted from a sweet, down-the-middle rom-com. Aren’t Anna Kendrick and Ryan Reynolds just so cute together, as they bask in the aftermath of their successful date? However, context is a bitch: What Kendrick doesn’t know is that her mild-mannered love interest is actually a serial killer, and that moment where Reynolds says he’s got to go home and touch base with his pets isn’t just a cute quirk — he’s a schizophrenic who believes that his cat, Mr. Whiskers, is commanding him to kill. If that all sounds so deranged that you can’t help but laugh, rest assured that it’s the film’s intent: Director Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) has fashioned an off-kilter black comedy punctuated by bursts of bloody red, a formula that left audiences buzzing at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. You’ll be able to check out the mayhem yourself soon, since The Voices is out February 6 in theaters and on demand.
