Gamers and geeks, big news! Deadline is reporting that Steven Spielberg has signed on to direct Ready Player One, the film adaptation of Ernest Cline’s popular 2011 dystopian sci-fi novel of the same name. The book, set in 2044, follows a teenager named Wade Watts, who sets out to find an Easter egg in a virtual-reality game called OASIS in order to win the company offered up as the prize by the game’s creator for winning. As Deadline notes, “The key to winning the game is a plethora of pop culture clues from the 1980s” — which could mean copyright hell for Spielberg. But then again, it’s Spielberg! The technological nature of the book might also hopefully mean we’ll have to use one of those Oculus Rift thingamajigs to even properly see the film. Yay?
