Amy Schumer Flawlessly Parodies Friday Night Lights to Skewer Rape Culture

“[Joking about rape] is always a risk,” Amy Schumer told an audience at the Tribeca Film Festival early this week, after showing “Football Town Nights,” the brilliant Friday Night Lights parody that debuted in last night’s Inside Amy Schumer premiere. “You might look at this scene and think we’re making light of something serious, but we really are trying to educate. We know what message we want to send, and then we also think the premise is funny, and then we go to town.” Now that we’ve seen the sketch, we can say they truly nailed it. They have done pitch-perfect parody before with “The Foodroom,” and shown an ability to draw seriously funny comedy from an unflinching look at rape culture with “A Very Realistic Military Video Game,” but “Football Town Nights” is some next-level stuff. It’s an instant classic. Pour yourself a giant glass of white wine and enjoy.
