Adnan Syed is one small step further in his quest to get a new trial: His case today was remanded to the Circuit Court for Baltimore city, which will have the opportunity to reconsider its 2014 denial of Syed’s petition for post-conviction relief. Syed was convicted in 2000 of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee; his case was made famous by the podcast “Serial,” which featured an interview with potential alibi witness Asia McClain, who claimed she was never contacted by Adnan’s defense attorney. Syed’s new petition hinges in part on a new affidavit from McClain, and if the Circuit Court chooses, McClain could take the stand in Syed’s defense for the first time. If the court is convinced Syed’s original attorney erred in not calling McClain, he could get a new hearing from the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.
