Adam Sandler Says the Racism Claims Against ‘Ridiculous Six’ Are ‘Just a Misunderstanding’

Remember back in April when a dozen Native American actors walked off the set of Adam Sandler’s Netflix movie The Ridiculous Six over its racist depictions of their characters, with names like “Beaver’s Breath” and “No Bra” as well as a scene of an Apache woman “squatting and urinating while smoking a peace pipe”? Well, Sandler has finally broken his silence about the controversy, insisting that not only has this been a huge misunderstanding that will clear up once the movie is released, but that Ridiculous Six is actually a “pro-Indian movie.” Sandler expanded on his comments to ScreenCrush:

I talked to some of the actors on the set who were there and let them know that the intention of the movie is 100% to just make a funny movie. It’s really about American Indians being good to my character and about their family and just being good people. There’s no mocking of American Indians at all in the movie. It’s a pro-Indian movie. So hopefully when people see it — whoever was offended on set and walked out, I hope they realize that, and that’s it. It was kinda taken out of context.

The Ridiculous Six doesn’t premiere on Netflix until 2016, but if you missed the Native American controversy, these excerpts from an earlier version of the script should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect.
