The Women of Difficult People
Created by Julie Klausner and executive-produced by Amy Poehler, the new Hulu Original series Difficult People, debuting on August 5, is about two BFFs in their mid-30s trying to make it as comedians. On the show, Julie Kessler (played by Klausner) defines herself as a comedy writer/actress/cabaret performer, but what she really does is write recaps of TV shows for a website, while her bestie Billy Epstein (played by Billy Eichner) waits tables. Oblivious and self-absorbed, they don’t get why they’re not famous yet—or why it’s not appropriate to loudly whisper about ordering lunch during a funeral. With such heavy-hitting female talent at the helm, get to know the women behind this ridiculous comedy now.

Now this Golden Globe winner brings her comedic cred and longtime experience from top shows like Parks and Recreation and SNL to Difficult People.

You probably started hearing about Klausner when her first book, I Don’t Care About Your Band, was optioned by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s production company for a TV show in 2010. Since then her How Was Your Week? podcast has been hailed as one of the funniest things you can stream. Writing and starring in Difficult People, which she also executive produces, she makes Julie Kessler a character who is prone to an exaggerated sense of specialness and offensive tweets.

Playing Julie’s mom, Marilyn Kessler, award-winning actress Andrea Martin is hilarious as a narcissistic therapist, who leads a perfect life and has no real issues apart from her daughter not having provided her with grandkids yet. She’s also not the best listener and doesn’t understand the “little comedy things” Julie does downtown. In one episode, Julie tries to befriend a vet to prove she’s charitable to Marilyn’s surrogate daughter.

Making her debut as the lead in the Oscar-nominated film Precious, Gabourey Sidibe received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress becoming an instant force to be reckoned with on the big screen, and then again on the small screen as Becky on Empire. As the owner of the café where Billy works, she has little patience for his attempts to befriend his “sassy gal-pal boss” and the more he tries, the more he annoys her.
