John Oliver Explains Why We Need a Federal LGBT Anti-Discrimination Law on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Here’s a clip from last night’s Last Week Tonight, where John Oliver covers discrimination against LGBT people in the United States and why leaving the issue up to each state isn’t enough when there are still 31 states where LGBTs are at risk of being fired or refused service because of their sexual orientation. Instead, Oliver brings up a bill currently in Congress called the Equality Act – which would make discriminating against LGBTs illegal across the board – but only four presidential candidates gave Last Week Tonight a comment about whether or not they support it, and one of those comments was just “We’ll pass. Thanks.” Despite the gay marriage ruling earlier this year, there’s still a long way to go until LGBTs in the US have true equality, but a federal law protecting their rights would be a great start in the fight against discrimination and all those Christian bakers out there with a very exaggerated take on the meaning of “religious freedom.”
