In a recent interview with W, Drake, Toronto’s best import, shares that he was “kicked off” Degrassi. When he joined Degrassi: The Next Generation as the character Jimmy Brooks at 14, he was already making music, which he says “was part of the reason I was kicked off the show.” He further describes juggling the show and his music career and says, “Back then, I’d spend a full day on set and then go to the studio to make music until 4 or 5 a.m. I’d sleep in my dressing room and then be in front of the cameras again by 9 a.m. Eventually, they realized I was juggling two professions and told me I had to choose.”

Drake says that he “chose this life.” “This life” being sold-out shows and subtweeting his exes on his albums, of course.

Now Degrassi co-creator and executive producer Linda Schuyler tells BuzzFeed Canada that’s not the case. She says, “I’m hoping there was just some miscommunication here, because if that’s the perception nothing could make me sadder. From my point of view, the timing was absolutely brilliant because we knew Aubrey was juggling his music. His character had run its course, so we were nothing but supportive. He’s my boy Aubrey, but I’m very proud of Drake.”
