Netflix has ordered the adaptation of Jay Asher’s best-selling YA novel 13 Reasons Why (stylized as TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY because teens) as a 13-episode series, reports The Wrap. Actress and Voice adviser Selena Gomez will play Hannah Baker, the teenager at the center of the plot who commits suicide and leaves behind 13 tapes to send to various people that explain how they contributed to her death. She’ll also serve as executive producer alongside her mother, Mandy Teefey, and producer Kristel Laiblin. The Tony Award– and Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright for Next to Normal Brian Yorkey has written the pilot and will also serve as an executive producer. The story will likely focus on Clay, who receives the tapes and the instructions, which would allow Gomez to keep up with her many commitments as a multihyphenate singer-actress-producer–Voice adviser.
