Hailee Steinfeld’s New Alessia Cara–Inspired Song Has a Ridiculous Title — But You’ll Probably Love It Anyway

FOGO is a very real thing, and Hailee Steinfeld has it bad. The actress turned overnight pop star is releasing her debut EP Haiz on Friday, and with it comes music’s latest rumination on social anxiety. “Hell Nos and Headphones” (yes, really), another mid-tempo blessing from Semi Precious Weapon’s Justin Tranter (pop’s new BFF this year), is one long musical eye-roll. She’s at a party where everyone’s “skiing in the powder room” (Hailee’s still not great at subtlety) and “making love to Jack and Jameson” while they “all look me up and down like I’m the fucking new kid.” Why? Because instead of indulging in coke and whiskey, she’ll just take the high road, thanks, and “stick with hell nos and headphones.” Not unlike Snakehips’ equally great new song with Tinashe and Chance the Rapper, it borrows heavily from Alessia Cara’s wallflower swag, and admittedly so. “‘Here’ really struck a chord with me,” Steinfeld tells Elle. “This does have the same message of realizing, ‘It’s cool that I was able to go and hang out with friends, but it was just not my night.’” Nothing says turnt like Hailee Steinfeld!
