Something about ILoveMakonnen reminds me of Nick Cave. They look nothing alike, they sound nothing alike — if anything, Makonnen, when he sings, sounds like Caruso on codeine — but I find them both mesmerizingly weird in the best possible way and hope, with any luck, Makonnen will go on to have a career that is equally impressive and varied as Cave’s. He’s on his way, releasing today the follow-up to last year’s ILoveMakonnen EP, which featured the runaway, Drake-approved party banger, “Tuesday.” This second installment, ILoveMakonnen 2, is a much sleeker affair with a feature from Santigold on the opener and production from DJ Mustard and FKi. The standout, “Trust Me Danny,” is a song I cannot listen to without turning it way up and then hitting repeat — twice. There’s also “Where Your Girl At,” on which the 26-year-old rapper from Atlanta relives a common, pubescent fantasy during the hook. Elsewhere he shows off his growing power over his voice, which at turns veers softly toward Morrissey territory without ever sounding overly sentimental (he’s still a rapper, after all). ILoveMakonnen has yet to release a full album, but he’s on Drake’s OVO Sound label, and I think it’s safe to say his transition from internet fame to real-world fame will probably happen sometime next year. In the meantime, stream ILoveMakonnen 2 below.
