While you might have known that Hateful Eight will have two distinct theatrical releases, one of which is a 70mm Ultra Panavision version, you might not have gleaned what an insane undertaking that will actually be. As the New York Times reports, the Weinstein Company spent a year and a half scouring the damn earth for 100 70mm projectors, as well as the projectionists able to use them. No film has opened on 100 screens in 70mm since 1992. As for Ultra Panavision, Hateful Eight is the first film shot in the wide-as-hell format since 1966’s Khartoum. Or, alternately, you can just watch it on a screen the size of a slice of American cheese while waiting for the bus. Your call.
