At the beginning of (and throughout) every month, Hulu adds new movies and TV shows to its catalogue. Here is a quick list of several that you might be interested in. Feel free to note anything we’ve left out in the comments below — and for more comprehensive coverage of the best titles available on Hulu and elsewhere, check out Vulture’s What to Stream Now, which is updated throughout the month.
The horror, the horror! Apocalypse Now (1979)
It’s a little odd to say that Francis Ford Coppola’s Heart-of-Darkness-meets-the-Vietnam-War masterpiece is coming to Hulu, almost as if the news broke that Gordon Ramsay’s making filet mignon to order on Seamless. But such is the world we live in, and such is a sign of Hulu’s increasingly well-stocked library. (There’s a lot of the Criterion collection on here too.) Watch the film on as large a screen as possible, if you can, and enjoy all of its most famous set pieces, from helicopters blasting “Ride of the Valkyries” to Marlon Brando’s disturbed Colonel Kurtz. Available December 1.
Them apples: Good Will Hunting (1997)
Catch up on the early days of Matt Damon’s career, when we thought of him not as a Hollywood don known for growing potatoes in his excrement (on The Martian) and making uninformed comments (on Project Greenlight), but as a strapping youngster in an oddly close friendship with Ben Affleck. Available with a Showtime add-on December 1.
You like this sheeyit? Spring Breakers (2012)
Harmony Korine’s riotous film about coeds gone wild made the world reevaluate its understanding of Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Vanessa Hudgens, but it’s best remembered for crossing, and breaking, the James Franco irony event horizon, creating an all-time great performance that the actor’s subsequent art projects have failed to surpass. Available with a Showtime add-on December 12.
Wibbily-wobbly timey-wimey: Interstellar (2014)
The super-serious dust bowl companion to the relatively upbeat Martian (with an equally serious space cadet Jessica Chastain and an evil version of [REDACTED]), Interstellar finds Christopher Nolan at his most ponderous, but also his most heartfelt and imaginative. Now that it’s out on streaming, you can pause the movie to take notes and try to chart sense of its crazypants take on theoretical physics and/or make your own Matthew McConaughey crying-face GIFs. Your choice! Available December 12.
The countdown starts: Deutschland 83 (Season 1)
Sundance’s German import follows a young East German forced into a job as a spy in West Germany. Over the course of his travails in the capitalist West, our protagonist Martin learns about everything from supermarkets to casual sex, all while contending with his terrifying Aunt Lenora (an intimidatingly fashionable Maria Schrader). If you wished The Americans was more fun, played more disco pop (Deutschland’s opening credits sample “Major Tom,” to give you a sense of its dedication to period music), and featured more cute German dudes, this is the show for you. Available December 18.
