Welcome to The Second City Archives, in which we post an exclusive clip each week of some of comedy’s biggest superstars performing early in their careers on the legendary Chicago stage. Second City has generously given us a glimpse into their extensive archive of live performances, and over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing some rare and retro comedy never before seen on the web.
Between Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Years, December is obviously a big month for holiday parties, but Kwanzaa always seems to get left out of the mix. So this week, Second City unearthed a clip from the 2000 revue Better Late Than Nader featuring Andy Cobb, Debra Downing, Martin Garcia, Jack McBrayer, and Abby Sher as a group of friends who decide to throw a surprise Kwanzaa party for one of their friends (played by David Pompeii). Unfortunately the friends know nothing about Kwanzaa – even though they mean well by dressing up like “Kwanzaa Claus” – and it certainly doesn’t help when they find out their friend never celebrated Kwanzaa to begin with. Check out another clip from the same revue here.
