Donald Trump Is Stephen Colbert’s Old Character With $10 Billion and a Weaker Grasp of Irony

Speaking with John Dickerson on Face the Nation, Stephen Colbert likened Donald Trump, Republican front-runner for the most powerful position in the Western Hemisphere, to Colbert’s old character. This is not a flattering comparison, for those who have trouble with the concept of satire. “He’s my old character with ten billion dollars,” Colbert said. “He’s completely playing on an emotional level, and so beautifully. I mean, that’s one of the reasons why I just can’t do that old character anymore, because he’s doing it better than I ever could because he’s willing to drink his own Kool-Aid. And manufacture and distribute it because he’s got all the cash.” Colbert added, “He’s this very interesting, like Frankenstein, of the idea that facts don’t matter and only money does,” which basically describes Fox News’s approach to journalism.
