If you hit a traffic jam when you’re already late, should you call your friends to let them know? Is it rude to inform your hostess that you really don’t need that ten-thousandth spoon but would really prefer a knife? When you meet the man of your dreams and then his beautiful wife, how do you forget the both of them entirely and start working on yourself? These questions and more will be answered come January 16, when Alanis Morissette becomes The Guardian’s new weekend advice columnist, taking over for Molly Ringwald. The hiring isn’t as paradoxical and incongruous as you might think: Morissette says she often acted as the “family therapist” growing up, and she’s been recording advice podcasts on her website for a while. Which is great, but we really just want to see someone write in a question about that “cross-eyed bear.”
