Director Benny Boom has found Tupac’s dearest mama: Danai Gurira will play political activist Afeni Shakur in the upcoming biopic All Eyez on Me, currently in production in Atlanta, Deadline reports. Gurira, best known as the samurai-sword-wielding zombie-slayer Michonne from The Walking Dead, also has her play Eclipsed about the Liberian civil war starring Lupita Nyong’o coming to Broadway in February. Afeni Shakur herself must have approved of the choice: She’s an executive producer on the film, the keeper of her son’s estate, and, as we all well remember, a black queen.
