formation world tour

Watch Beyoncé Salute Prince With ‘Purple Rain’ — Plus Other Highlights From Her First Formation Show

After DJ Khaled, along with the likes of Lil Wayne, Future, 2 Chainz, and Rick Ross, had readied the Marlins Park crowd, it was time: Beyoncé’s much-anticipated Formation World Tour finally began in Miami on Wednesday night, with a wide-ranging arsenal of hits and a flurry of emotions. (Also, with police and fun shirts.) “She moved so skillfully between vulnerable and in control,” wrote Kelli Kennedy for the AP, “that it was impossible to tell what was real and how much was artistic posturing.” Coming only a few days post-Lemonade, the opening night featured songs ranging from “Drunk in Love” and “Crazy in Love,” to “Daddy Lessons” and “6 Inch.”

Queen B also took time to salute the late Prince, using one of her costume changes to send her audience into a partial “Purple Rain” sing-along, embedded above. “Prince, thank you for your beautiful music,” Bey said later on in the show. “He’s an artist that inspired all of us.” She reportedly gave Jay Z a shout-out, too, when she ended the night with “Halo.” “I want to dedicate this song to my beautiful husband,” she said. “I love you so much.”
