Two years ago, Taichi Ueda said the time had “come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood.” Now, the U.S. trailer for Godzilla Resurgence (Shin Godzilla in Japan) is here to back up that threat. Toho Studios’ return to the iconic franchise involves a much more menacing and ugly version of the daikaiju, one with a longer, serpentine tail and a lipless scowl. Luckily, his iconic theme remains the same. Unlike the wide release afforded Gareth Edwards’s 2014 Godzilla, Resurgence moves Stateside in a limited release this October.
