‘Archer’ Producers Call Jon Hamm Their ‘Greatest Hope’ for a Live-Action Sterling Archer

Archer wrapped up its seventh season last Thursday, and while we wait on renewal news from FX, executive producers Matt Thompson and Casey Willis recently spoke with The Daily Beast about a possible live-action movie version of the show and the actor they’d most love to play Sterling Archer:

“It’s Jon Hamm,” says Thompson, firmly. “If Archer goes live-action, I do believe it will be Jon Hamm. Maybe you could do it with Jon Benjamin’s voice coming out of him? I don’t know. Adam is always like, ‘I don’t know if I want the movie to be live-action because I want it to be Jon Benjamin!’ But if it is live-action—and if it is not Jon Benjamin—it is our greatest hope that it would be Jon Hamm. I can say that with confidence.”

Thompson explained that it’s all up to series creator Adam Reed, but talk of a possible live-action movie has been an ongoing discussion for years now: “The talk is there, we just still haven’t decided.” But don’t hold out for the movie anytime soon: “I don’t think there will be a movie before the last episode of Archer airs on TV,” Thompson added. “I don’t think we’ll make a movie before the series finishes.”

Hamm is obviously the perfect choice to play Archer on the big screen, but the idea of using Hamm with H. Jon Benjamin’s voice dubbed in sounds even better. Why choose one when you can have both? Thankfully, this is an idea the Archer team have been playing with for a while now – Adam Reed told The Daily Beast back in 2014 that they were “working on a way to create an H. Jon Hamm Benjamin hybrid. Or should be.”
