After the failure of gun-control measures in the Senate Monday night, it’s easy to feel cynical about the ease with which the National Rifle Association has captured the support of a significant chunk of our political system. But, as Samantha Bee reminds us, things weren’t always this way. As recently as the 1990s, major Republicans like George H.W. Bush were taking stands against the gun lobby. Ronald Reagan, too! As she notes, “There’s nothing like getting shot to put you on the side of gun control … so at this rate, most Americans will come around in the next year or two.” Dark.
