Welcome to The Second City Archives, in which we post an exclusive clip each week of some of comedy’s biggest superstars performing early in their careers on the legendary Chicago stage. Second City has generously given us a glimpse into their extensive archive of live performances, and over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing some rare and retro comedy never before seen on the web.
A new football season is upon us, so this week Second City sent us a great clip from the 1999 revue The Second City 4.0, which featured ensemble performers Kevin Dorff, T.J. Jagodowski, Susan Messing, Ed Furman, Tami Sagher, Rich Talarico, and Stephnie Weir. In the above scene “Sportz,” Dorff plays a football player who is eager to express how much he owes his team’s win to the Lord, only to have his logic tested by a reporter (Furman): “Speaking of playoffs, your victory today eliminates any playoff hope for Kansas City. The team has struggled all year, they’ve been plagued with serious injuries. Kevin, why does God hate the Kansas City Chiefs?” “Well, perhaps the Kansas City Chiefs are evil and God has chosen to smite them.” Watch another clip from the same revue here.
