FX Renews Atlanta and Better Things for Second Seasons

Well, that was fast: FX has ordered second seasons of Donald Glover’s Atlanta and Pamela Adlon’s Better Things, just two weeks after the new comedies premiered. While the speed of the pickups isn’t unprecedented for FX, it is a bit unusual for the network, which tends to wait until it has many weeks of Nielsen and non-linear viewing data available before making decisions about the future of its shows. But both shows have generated solid ratings for their early episodes, with Atlanta performing particularly well. Glover’s half-hour actually drew more viewers among key demo groups during its second week on the air (almost unheard-of these days), while FX notes Better Things is bringing a ton of female viewers to the male-skewing FX. Critics have also been rapturous in their praise of both shows, something FX chief John Landgraf has said he considers when evaluating the performance of his series. The second seasons of Better Things and Atlanta will run ten episodes and are likely (though not guaranteed) to launch in mid- to late 2017.
