Behind the Scenes at the Toronto Film Festival’s Hottest Party

Michael Shannon is a Vulture hero for many reasons, chief among those being he’s the kind of guy who shows up to the Toronto Film Festival’s fanciest party, the annual HFPA/In Style bash, in a Hawaiian shirt and jean shorts. He’s also the guy who later lies down on a banquette, surrounded by ladies in ballgowns and men in sharp suits, in said amazing Jimmy Buffett outfit, next to a yellow light that made him look like he was in a tanning booth. “Just trying to get a healthy glow,” he said.

Nearby, Anne Hathaway could be overhead telling director Xavier Dolan about her new, insane monster movie Colossal (“I’m so excited! It’s so beautiful and weird!”), while P. Diddy’s former umbrella holder Fonzworth Bentley was there for some reason, and Nick Kroll, who has two movies — Oscar contender Loving and the animated Sing — was telling anyone who would listen about the Kanye West concert he’d been to last week at Madison Square Garden. He’d actually had tickets to see Beyoncé at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, but she cancelled on doctor’s orders for vocal rest. “She said she was sick and then the next night I saw her at Kanye! I was like …,” he said, while making a skeptical scowl. Bad Beyoncé!

Nicole Kidman! Amy Adams! Pharrell! Shailene Woodley! Rooney Mara! Click through to see who else turned up.
