John Hostetter, best known for his role as the serene stage manager John in Murphy Brown, is dead at the age of 69. Deadline reports that the actor’s death came last Friday due to cancer complications. Hostetter appeared in all 10 seasons of Murphy Brown, as well as showing up in a flurry of other popular TV series over the course of his career. His early credits include roles in Hill Street Blues, The Golden Girls, Moonlighting, Family Ties, and Dallas, and, later, Cagney & Lacey, Falcon Crest, Quantum Leap, L.A. Law, Matlock, MacGyver, Knots Landing, Who’s the Boss?, NYPD Blue, and ER. The character actor also made his mark in film — appearing in movies like Beverly Hills Cop II and Star Trek: Insurrection — and onstage, where he once starred in a Waiting For Godot production with an early-in-his-career Christopher Reeve. Hostetter is survived by his wife, his sister, three nephews, and a grand-nephew.
