Alyssa Edwards didn’t emerge from her mother’s womb as the lip-popping, jump-splitting, mirror-gazing queen that you know and love. She too was just a little boy with big dreams. Alyssa recently dropped by the Vulture studios and reminisced about the first time she did drag, complete with her sister’s butterfly clips and an innovative way to tuck. She was just a teenage boy in Mesquite, Texas, confounded by this thing called “lip-syncing,” and decided to perform during at an open mic. The rest, as they say, is herstory.
