Trailer viewers in 2016 have spoken, and they like their romantic movies — both of the mom-erotica and chaste-musical varieties — to include rich dudes with tempers and doe-eyed women in bondage or captivity. While we could probably write a decent college dissertation on what this means about our culture, let’s just stick to the numbers: The trailer for Disney’s live-action, Emma Watson–starring Beauty and the Beast was viewed across digital platforms 127.6 million times in just 24 hours. That’s over 10 million more views than the previous record holder 50 Shades Darker, which received 114 million back in September. Beauty and the Beast, which also stars Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, and a bunch of famous voices as CGI-talking houseware, hits theaters March 17. We’d suggest Beauty and the Beast rub its victory in the face of the other 2017 release, but we’re under the impression that 50 Shades likes being topped.
