Green Day Launch Into Anti-Trump Protest During AMAs Performance

The outcome of the 2016 presidential election was fodder for plenty of jokes at the AMAs on Sunday night, but there was at least one band who wasn’t laughing. Performing their rebellious new single “Bang Bang” at the show, Green Day took direct aim at President-elect Donald Trump and the kind of America many fear he’ll lead. “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA!” Billie Joe Armstrong chanted mid-song. Following the election, Green Day’s politically prescient hit “American Idiot” reportedly saw a surge in streams; at the EMAs shortly before the election, the band had changed that song’s lyrics to say “subliminal mind-Trump America.” Watch their protest above.

Update, November 21: TMZ reports that ABC, the network which aired the AMAs, was blindsided by Green Day’s chant. A source from the network notes that the protest wasn’t an orchestrated plan, but rather a “last-minute decision” made by the band prior to taking the stage.
