Look, maybe there was once a time when one could consume some mindless entertainment and draw absolutely no parallels to any particular current events, none whatsoever, and maybe that time will come again. But that time is not just now. On Thursday’s The Late Late Show, Hailee Steinfeld and James Corden played a should’ve-been-breezy game of “First Line, Ever Line,” wherein you repeatedly sing a song’s first lyric to its entire melody, and, yeah, you can read into it if you want. For example, Steinfeld picked Katy Perry’s “Firework,” whose first line asks, “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?” Um, yes, Hailee, we may be somewhat familiar with that sensation. At least the incessant prodding about feelings of aimlessness is cheaper than therapy.
