Halle Berry Is Not Taking Bruno Mars’s Booty Call

The new Bruno Mars record, 24K Magic, is finally here, purchasable and streamable at your leisure. It’s a relatively low-key release with few of the usual pop-world frills: There are no major production flourishes nor superstar guest vocalists here. None, that is, except Halle Berry. No, the Academy Award–winning actress is not launching a pop career; yes, you can hear her voice on the new 24K track “Calling All My Lovelies.” Huh? Well, in this case she appears via outgoing voice-mail message. Which means that in the fictional world of this song — a song in which our protagonist is upset that a woman is not available to him in that immediate moment and he must therefore call “all” his other “lovelies” — Bruno Mars has Halle Berry’s phone number. And in that same world, Ms. Berry is either busy being, you know, Halle Berry, or she’s screening his call. Either way, as Bruno says when he can’t reach her: “Damn.” Stream all of 24K Magic below, and catch Bruno Mars live when he opens the AMAs this Sunday night.
