Legendary poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen has died at 82, his label confirmed in a statement Thursday. “It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away. We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries,” the statement read. “A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief.” The news comes shortly after the release of Cohen’s fourteenth studio album, You Want It Darker, to high critical praise. Though no cause of death has been given, Cohen had reportedly been in ailing health; in a recent career-spanning profile in The New Yorker, he said he did not plan to tour again, and said that he was “ready to die.”
