As the heroic efforts of the Syrian Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, enter the spotlight on 60 Minutes and with Orlando von Einsiedel’s Netflix documentary The White Helmets, activist and filmmaker George Clooney has also taken an interest in their story. The Netflix doc follows the story of the unarmed Syrian men who are the first responders during the daily bombs and attacks that have plagued their country in recent years. With many hospitals destroyed in the conflict, these men — about 3,000 of them total — provide the emergency care needed by removing survivors from rubble and getting them to safety. An estimated 70,000 people have been saved by the citizens group. Though details are still vague on the nature of the project, Deadline reports that Clooney is developing a narrative feature about the White Helmets with his Smokehouse Pictures partner, producer Grant Heslov (Argo).
