Without seeing it (or maybe with seeing it), it’s hard to say what precisely Fifty Shades Darker is about. Jane Eyre but with BDSM is maybe in the ballpark? Regardless of the meager matter of plot, it is very easy to see that Fifty Shades Darker is going for a particular vibe, and that vibe is sexy angst. Taylor Swift and Zayn Malik’s “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” the biggest song off the movie’s soundtrack, certainly fits the bill — they’re together and they love each other but something has to be wrong so it’s hot? But “Bom Bidi Bom,” Nick Jonas and Nicki Minaj’s entry for the movie, is harder to square away given that the song is, well, pleasant. In it, Jonas coolly brags about his sexual prowess, and Minaj agrees. That’s it. Mutually satisfying, stress-free, bouncy casual sex happenings? In Fifty Shades? Unlike the questions of Christian’s past, perhaps a mystery worth solving.
