HBO’s Girls is known for brutally honest depictions of sex, millennials, and an anti–Sex and the City wardrobe. One thing it’s famously not known for? Diversity, from reducing people of color that we rarely see to stereotypical caricatures to its all-white cast. And as Girls is about to enter its sixth and final season this year, the diversity debate is being batted around again in looks back at the legacy of the series. On Wednesday night, when series creator and star Lena Dunham fell ill and had to bow out of hosting duties at the amfAR New York Fashion Week Gala, supermodel Iman took the stage on last minute’s notice — and she came equipped with a well-timed, and perfectly pitched, joke. “I’m not actually Lena Dunham. I know it’s hard to tell us apart,” said Iman, as laughter exploded in the ballroom. “I have been on Girls, except that you guys have not seen me, because I was playing a white girl.”
