Disney Refuses to Cut Beauty and the Beast ‘Gay Moment’ Despite Malaysia Objection

Disney has decided against censoring out Beauty and the Beast’s “gay moment” for the film’s Malaysian release. The decision comes after Disney initially made a cut of the film without the contested scene available to the country’s Film Censorship Board, and the board approved the edited version for release. Malaysia has strict laws prohibiting homosexuality, and the board’s chairman said of the minor scene in question, “It is only one short scene, but it is inappropriate because many children will be watching this movie.” On Wednesday, Disney announced that it will not allow Beauty and the Beast to be released without the moment, but it will delay the film’s release date until March 30 to give the board additional time to come to a final decision.
