In a move marketers did not need an enhanced cybernetic brain to imagine, detractors took to Ghost in the Shell’s new “I Am Major” meme generator not to indulge in a little viral marketing for the upcoming Scarlett Johansson movie, but to suggest that maybe an Asian actress should have been cast as the film’s protagonist Major Motoko Kusanagi (the character’s name is shorted to the Major in the film) and to drag Hollywood for its history of whitewashing Asian and Asian-American roles in general. Twitter’s @ValerieComplex kicked off the meme-ing and, all being said and done, it did turn out pretty Major.
