Showtime Orders ‘SMILF’ Comedy Series Starring Frankie Shaw and Rosie O’Donnell

Showtime has a new half-hour comedy in the works. According to Variety, the network has given a 10-episode series order to a comedy written, produced, and directed by Frankie Shaw called SMILF, which is based on her 2014 Sundance short of the same name and has been in development at Showtime since 2015. The series will center on “a single, 20-something from South Boston whose desires for relationships, sex, and a career collide with the realities of young, single motherhood.” Shaw will play the lead role, and Rosie O’Donnell has signed on to play Tutu, the mother of Shaw’s character “who is completely oblivious to social convention.” Michael Landon, Janice Williams, Lee Eisenberg, and Gene Stupnitsky are credited as co-executive producers on the show, which will debut in Showtime sometime this fall.
