Late Night Shows Respond to Donald Trump’s Trans Military Ban

After Donald Trump took to Twitter yesterday to announce that he’s banning transgender people from serving in the military, last night’s late night shows stepped up to respond to the news. In the above clip, Jimmy Fallon welcomed “Tonight Show Correspondent” Patti Harrison, a comedian and transgender woman who offered her response to Trump’s decision: “Trump says transgender people in the military would be a tremendous disruption. And I get it – if you constantly draw attention to yourself, spend all day distracting everyone, and cost taxpayers millions of dollars, the perfect job for you isn’t the military, it’s the President of the United States.”

Over on The Late Late Show, James Corden opened the show with a musical number, “L-G-B-T”:

On Late Night, Seth Meyers welcomed writers Amber Ruffin, Jenny Hagel, Ally Hord, and Dina Gusovsky to respond to the news. “We actually thought you’d be a lot more sensitive to trans people because you transitioned – from Democrat to Republican.” “From pro-choice to pro-life.” “From white to orange.” “From married to divorced to married to divorced to married…to separated.” “You transitioned more than anyone we know.”

On Chelsea, Handler closed the show with a handy tip: “To the members of the Republican party that continue to choose party over politics: grow a fucking spine.”

On The Daily Show, Trevor Noah sat down with transgender veterans Jennifer Marie Long and Joey Whimple for a wide-ranging chat on the real-life effects the ban will have on transgender service members:

And finally, on The Late Show and Full Frontal, Stephen Colbert and Samantha Bee delivered the same exact response to Trump’s tweet about the ban: “’Thank you’? Fuck you.”
