John Mayer Quit Drinking After a 6-Day Hangover From Drake’s 30th Birthday Party

John Mayer is a changed man. In addition to being marginally less of a dick, according to him, Mayer has also been sober for two years, indirectly because of Drake. As Mayer tells it to Complex, he has the “most amazing last-night-of-my-life-drinking story” and he’s not wrong. The last time Mayer drank was at Drake’s 30th birthday party in October 2016 where at least 2 of his 500 sexual conquests (or just celeb exes), Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, were also in attendance. And so you can see where this is going. “I made quite a fool of myself,” he says. “And then I had a conversation with myself. I remember where I was. I was in my sixth day of the hangover. That’s how big the hangover was.” Mayer, who was creeping up on 40 and feeling it, had an epiphany. “I looked out the window and I went, ‘OK, John, what percentage of your potential would you like to have? Because if you say you’d like 60, and you’d like to spend the other 40 having fun, that’s fine. But what percentage of what is available to you would you like to make happen? There’s no wrong answer. What is it?’ I went, ‘100.’”

Mayer can’t, however, seem to quit Kanye. “We are all Kanye apologists, to an extent, that we do not offer to anyone in our personal life,” he says. His reasoning: We’ve all been brainwashed. “Kanye can do no wrong if you’ve decided he’s your guy. You’ll just change the qualifications because it’s very unpleasant to scrub someone off your list. It’s very unpleasant to say ‘I was wrong’ or ‘I changed my mind’ or ‘not anymore.’ Look how hard it was to change our mind about Bill Cosby. It was the hardest thing to go, ‘I don’t wanna move you to another category.’”
