Seth Meyers Slams Networks for Allowing Trump to ‘Repeat His Lies’

During last night’s Late Night, Seth Meyers devoted his “Closer Look” segment to the ongoing government shutdown and Donald Trump’s announcement that he’s giving a prime-time address tonight, in which he will push for the border wall to be built and paid for by taxpayers. “There is no more basic test of a political leader than this: Can you keep the government running? And Trump is now again failing that test for the third time in his presidency. In real life, you don’t get hired after that,” Meyers says. “He’s like a stoner working at a pizza place: ‘Hey Kevin, how is business today?’ ‘Uh, yeah, it was really slow, man.’ ‘Did you unlock the front door?’ ‘Ohhhh mannnnn.’”

As Meyers notes, even in his tweet announcing the address, Trump spewed another lie, calling the border-wall issue a “Humanitarian and National Security crisis.” “We are in a self-inflicted crisis over a government shutdown because the president is incompetent and unhinged. He’s virtually incapable of uttering a truthful or coherent thought about almost anything,” Meyers says. “First of all, just because Trump wants to address the nation doesn’t mean networks should air it. Otherwise they’re just passing on his lies unfiltered. They should either reject him outright, or, if he insists on speaking in prime time, make him do it as a contestant on The Masked Singer.” As for Trump trying to score border-wall points by inaccurately referring to it as a “national-security crisis,” Meyers emphasizes, “Trump is totally incoherent and incapable of telling the truth. He shouldn’t get to address the nation just to repeat his lies.” As CNN notes, ABC, CBS, PBS, and Fox have all agreed to air the address tonight in addition to CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. Meyers’s network, NBC, will also air the address live.
