The Cast of Adam Calls It a Story of Queer Friendship Disguised As a Rom-Com

By

In the movie Adam, which recently debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, a cis high-school boy named Adam is mistaken for trans by the girl he has a crush on while spending the summer with his big sister in New York. She’s immersed herself in the city’s lesbian and trans activist scene, and awkward Adam finds himself as a spectator to their interweaving stories of love and friendship while he tries to navigate a case of mistaken identity (with a girl who also has big feelings for his sister, but that’s beside the point right now.) Director Rhys Ernst and some of the cast came by the Vulture Spot at the Fest to talk about unpacking queer identity in “fresh ways,” and how Adam is actually a love letter to friendship disguised as a (kind of) traditional rom-com.
