You know her best from suspenseful titles like Thoroughbreds, Split, and The Witch, but Anya Taylor-Joy is about to get her Bobby Fischer on. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress will take the lead in the forthcoming Netflix miniseries The Queen’s Gambit. Godless creator Scott Frank will write, direct, and executive produce the show, in which Taylor-Joy stars as Beth Harmon, an orphaned girl growing up in the Cold War era who aims to become the best chess player in the world — truly the dream of lonely children everywhere. The story will span Beth’s life from age 8 to 22, and as if being a chess prodigy wasn’t stressful enough, she will also battle issues with addiction. Taylor-Joy is also doing voice work on Netflix’s Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, because of course she has to balance out some straight drama by playing a Gelfling rebel. The genre roots must stay strong.
