Richard E. Grant Says Julianne Moore Wanted to Wear a Fat Suit in Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Will we ever know the full truth as to why Julianne Moore was fired from Can You Ever Forgive Me? Just six days before shooting was to begin, Nicole Holofcener made the decision to let Moore go. Shortly thereafter the whole project went kablooey, eventually emerging from the ashes starring Melissa McCarthy and directed by Marielle Heller. Moore let some of the tea spill on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, which is the only fitting place to start drama. Then The Hollywood Reporter leaked that the reason Moore was fired was because she wanted to wear a fake nose. Now Richard E. Grant, who was Oscar nominated for his role in the film, has let slip that Moore also wanted to don a fat suit. “Julianne Moore wanted to wear a fat suit and a false nose to play Lee Israel,” Grant told an audience at Advertising Week Europe, “and Nicole Holofcener said, ‘You’re not going to do that.”’ Fake noses have won Oscars before, but someone going full Klump in 2018 probably wasn’t going to receive accolades. Grant said that Sam Rockwell and Helena Bonham Carter would have been in the Moore/Holofcener version of the film.
